I built a PC earlier this year which should last me a long, long time. I fully expect my next one to come almost entirely from China

Yeah no, i still prefer being spied on by the US over being spied on by China.

Better yet, get me a computer that has only open source hardware, one that I can finally call my own

Yeah. As soon as I posted this I started thinking through that and realized that I’m completely wrong. It may actually be better for anyone to have China spy on them. In fact, especially USA citizens.

Or by a government committing genocide on subsets of it’s citizens? A government that has disappeared citizens for decades for bit falling in line? Yeah, the US does that now too but at least it’s just starting. At least the US has had some sort of free press until recently. Good luck with any of that in China

Also, you missed the part where I said that nobody should be able to spy on me, we need open source hardware. That is the much bigger point. The US and China both suck, I don’t want to have to deal with either

Oh come on, really now? Uyghurs. Let’s start there?

And yes, all that is happening, and no, China is notoriously NOT cooperating, and yes, they have a reach as even uyghurs in Europe are followed when they try and speak out.

None of this is controversial, this is well established. Then again you’re one of those “I did my research, I read a Facebook page!” type skeptics that always come up with these weird requirements that can’t be met before you’ll believe anything that doesn’t match your warped world view.

China is committing genocide on Uyghurs, that is established fact. If you don’t want to believe that, fine, but I would like to let you know that I have a bridge I can sell you at great discount!

                that is established fact

then you should not have a problem to prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

i don’t get this obsession with china when we have real verifiable atrocities anyway, but still.

Sure, I can give you sources but just your “prove it beyond reasonable doubt” tells me that it doesn’t matter what I give you, you won’t even read it, you just want “China great”

I mean, I have no problem whatsoever with seeing that the US is fucking evil, because it is. Yet for you, the mere notion that China might not be the perfect paradise seems impossible to grasp

Makes me wonder, are you one of those Chinese government funded shills?

I’ll send you reading materials if you like but I honestly doubt you have any interest in expanding your knowledge at al.

    Unfortunately this is irrelevant unless

    1. There are several independent reviews confirming the performance figures

    2. These GPUs are widely available to a global market

Even then, we can see with modern trends that Nvidia maintains a passive market lead because they are the default choice because they have a market lead, because they are the default choice, ad infinitum

Yeah that’s mentioned in the article, hopefully the new run is representative of an overall improved software situation and they’re not specifically targeting geekbench results.

But then I guess even if they are targeting geekbench then this run is representative of the performance of the GPU if they’re able to optimize for specific games anyways.

Been running Yeston 2gb gpus with AMD chips for a while with no problem. I’d buy the same with SMIC chips as long as a) it lowers the price b) has Linux drivers c) works with Ryzen CPUs.

Given the option, I prefer US spying over Chinese spying. Yes, the US, with all its shit, is still better than China since there still is (just a little) more transparent than China.

Having said that, why not neither? Can we please already start having open source hardware?

I think that Snowden (and other leakers) would argue that the US is much much less transparent. Though it is best to just assume that all major govs are spying on everyone (even if it makes an ass out of u and me). Though we can agree on open source hardware.

            Yeah I’m sorry, I’m not a fan.

Also, can you guys please stop defending China? I’m not defending the US, it’s a shit show, it’s always been a shit show. Well, at least for the past 5 decades or so. China too, is an absolute shit show and has been that for much, much longer.

For all its many many many MANY faults; in the US at least I can still write “fuck the Cheeto Trump” and be sure I won’t get a visit from state police. I know, trump will make sure that the US becomes more like China soon, but I fucking double dare you to live in China and make a post every day about how xi is winnie Pooh and how tiananmen square was a massacre back in the 90s

GPUs being able to spy on you is a problem. Linux and OSs should work on ways to minimise this possibility. But specifically worrying about them ratting you out to the CPC is in my opinion much less serious than spying on you for commercial interests. Ultimately it’s possible to avoid visiting China if you aren’t Chinese. Including Chinese websites.

Even if China were doing that, what would they do with the information? Nothing, because they don’t give a shit about you, because you’re on the other side of the planet. They’re not doing that because they’re not cartoon villains wasting their time and effort on nefarious plots against Western randos.

Also, almost all of your current hardware came from China, so I guess you’re not actually that worried about it.
