Yes, humans have included meat in their diets for thousands of years, but the recent changes that I feel shift the paradigm are: the scope and scale of industrial farming, the brutal conditions animals now face, and the fact that we have a good enough concept of human dietary requirements that people can finally make the choice to remove animal products from their diets in a healthy way.

I got a different impression from Scrubs. To me it was a show mostly about doctors, and whenever it did talk about the healthcare industry, it was largely critical. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I remember they would frequently criticize the bullshit and red tape in the healthcare industry. I think there’s even an episode in the first season where they commit insurance fraud to save a poor patient.

The actual answer is that faceless pawns make better canon folder villains because it’s less likely the audience will relate to them as actual people in the context of the narrative. The in-universe explanation is that faceless pawns are better foot soldiers for the empire because it’s less likely said empire will relate to them as actual people.
