Didn’t we used to have to sign the receipt that the store keeps, and they give us a copy to keep for our records?Or an e-signature on an electronic device. Is this still a thing? Or do I just not get out much lately?

Maybe it’s just a restaurant thing. I literally haven’t been to a restaurant since 2023.

I think in most of Europe, signing stopped when magnetic stripes were phased out and replaced by chip cards that require a PIN. That happened around 2008-2010, think?

Technically, it’s still possible to bypass the PIN, but in that case, the business has the full responsibility for any misuse, so almost no one allows it and the few that do usually require seeing an ID along with a signature. I think in the US it’s a bit different?

Canada had moved over to chip reader machines by 2012. Now that tap payments are common, I don’t even have to enter my PIN under a certain amount. I haven’t signed for a credit card transaction for over 10 years.

Here in France, I can’t remember ever doing that. And I’ve had a credit card in francs.

There’s a restaurant I go to periodically and a convenience store near me that both require a signature. Other than those, it’s all electronic for me now.

I’m American and use credit cards for everything, and I know what you mean. I almost never have to sign receipts anywhere as long as my transaction is low enough. Usually the only time I’m signing receipts or screens is if it’s a bar or restaurant with tips.

When this first started happening I asked one of the workers at whatever store I was in and they said it didn’t require signatures under a certain transaction dollar amount. IDK if laws in the US changed or what around that time, but it seemed to suddenly change everywhere.

Rarely did merchants ever check for matching signatures anyway and it was just a waste of everybody’s time and a waste of paper.

Some years ago I managed tech support for some bank branches and did a lot of travel. I was traveling to Colorado and had a standby in New Mexico (or something of the sort) and remember being shocked that I didn’t have to sign my receipt for some food at the airport. Seems that the state legislature had set a minimum that required a signature. It made a lot of sense to me at the time and I’m really glad that everyone else seems to have caught up.

I’ve literally never signed any of it. They don’t check your signature and only ever used it for disputes.

At this point if I contest a charge that has my name and not a dick or smiley face then I know it’s fraud.

Yeah, the signature is there really for the card holder to be able to dispute it.

I drove a taxi when people used to sign credit and debit cards. Never paid any attention as people just didn’t even seem like they’re trying to properly sign it, they just scratched something on it on random.

But if you do that all the time, it’s gonna be harder disputing things when someone actually steals it.

So you know. Mostly on the user.

Some restaurants/food shops still do, when tips are an option, but it does seem like anything that isn’t asking for a tip no longer asks for the signature.

    Depends where you are.

I still have to in most medical contexts, but retail doesn’t seem to really require it anymore below a hefty amount (like >$1k) but I’m in the US, so that may be part of it.
