North Korea, Venezuela, the USSR during the Cold War, East Germany, heck even China (I know on good authority) all have had people flee and many of the above nations had to put up literal barriers to try and stop the fleeing.

……why? Isn’t socialism supposed to be the end-means ultimate utopian model society that all should strive for proudly? Why would anyone want to flee that for the “evil dregs” of capitalism?

Help me make sense of this.

As I understand it, they’re usually running from authoritarianism, which comes in all flavors.

Just like people fleeing Pinochet in Chile, or Sadam in Iraq. No one has ever accused them of being socialist, but people still flee.

Why do you bring up failed states, and not more progressive social democratic countries? Oh, yeah. Doesn’t fit your stupid capitalist circle jerk. You should read up on deaths attributable to capitalism. Maybe you’d realize that whatever economic system you want, they all fall apart when the reality of asshole humans are introduced to the theory.

So if it’s so awesome, how come there aren’t more socialist countries that are successful? If it’s soooo awesome, there should be way more socialist countries. Right?:)

Survivorship bias, you only see the people who flee because they’re loud and they live in western countries. Objectively most people who lived in those countries still live there.

Watch what the US is doing in Venezuela, they democratically elected a socialist and they’re about to be invaded. Or hell look at whats about to happen to the next mayor of NYC, Trump isnt even accusing him of rigging the election because nobody can deny how overwhelmingly popular he is.

People want to be rich because of what they think they can do with the money, not for the money itself. Anyway, that doesn’t make America a capitalist country.

Capitalists worship the almighty profit. The dollar is just a tool for trade. They really aren’t the same thing.

Maybe it’s not, but the US is awesome and the best country in the world. Which is why so many people wanna come here. Also, just know that Lemmy is gonna really really hate you if you don’t automatically think the US is capitalist and totally evil. lol

Well especially in the countries you mentioned, folks come here because there’s a high social floor compared to back home and it’s relatively easy to get in because we do our agriculture in-house. That doesn’t describe a capitalist nation and it doesn’t mean there’s anything special about America. America is as capitalist as China is socialist.

I like it here. I’m not disagreeing with you, I am just pointing out that since you are going against the majority Lemmy groupthink, that you may get some pushback.

I’m all for pushing back against Lemmy groupthink tho, so I don’t have an issue with you. :)

Why did you come here though in the first place? What do you do other than post ragebait about US politics?

What makes you think I am ragebaiting? So because I post something you don’t agree with, it’s ragebait? So did Trump get voted in as president as ragebait? OR maybe, just maybe, people think and believe differently than you.

Do you think alternative political voices should be silenced?

How an it be “ragebait” if I posted a conservative-themed question to a conservative-themed community?! If you are here, and you’re not conservative and posting stuff, wouldn’t it be you who is playing the ragebait game?
