At this point, my assumption whenever I see heavy handed RTO orders like this, is that you’re seeing disguised layoffs.
Don’t want to spook the stock market, but still “need” to cut people to show profit “growth” this quarter? Just be such a massive ass to your employees that a ton of them quit. It’s that easy.
He also described the company’s transition as a shift away from some elements, including “loyalty, tenure, and conformance with the associated compensation,” to “a more market-based culture —focused on rewarding capability, contribution, and commitment.”
Meaning “We will squeeze every bit of productivity we can out of you, and you will be paid a pittance and like it.”
So strange to see them cracking the wage-slave whips while gleefully licking their lips about the potential of AI to replace every single employee (except themselves, obviously).
Who are you going to push around with no employees are left to fire? Where’s the money going to come from when no one can afford your terrible services?
WFH is better for employees and employers, so what is the real reason for RTO?
My best guess is downsizing without paying for unemployment or the bad press that comes with it.
For the people making the decision whether to return to office or not (AKA management), their job is simpler with everyone in the office. It is the nature of management. If everyone is in the same building, it is easier to keep them on task, foster collaboration, etc. It doesn’t matter that YOUR job is easier for you if you can work from home. Their job of management is more difficult.
Also, for businesses that also own the land underneath their building, the business is another way to purchase real estate. They are in essence double dipping, making money off of the business itself, and building value in the land underneath that business. The reduced square footage of a work from home model does not serve the land grab.
Some people might argue that it’s for a desire for control. Some people might argue that it’s just old people with no creativity trying to do things the way they’ve been done in the past. I think the reasons are more practical and fiscally driven.
“Market-based culture”
Translation: “The primary reason I work this job is to coerce sex out my employees, and that just doesn’t work as well when y’all are working remote.”
“Fuck you, peons. I will do whatever it takes to make you more miserable.”
“I’ll go in 5 days a week when the CEO does. Lead by example or STFU.”
His name is Stankey lol
Hey Stankey - If you dislike change, you’re going to dislike irrelevance even more.
