You know, this doesn’t sit right. Calling music “gay” for nebulous reasons, such as featuring vocals by women, is counterproductive. Hell, many of those tracks were national hits and there’s no way they got there if they were only enjoyed by people in the lgbtq+ community. The “target” here may be Vance, but the message being sent is that straight men can’t and shouldn’t enjoy certain types of music. This is middle school (from when I attended at least) bullshit and reinforces toxic masculinity.
THIS is why I’m on Lemmy. This comment, right here. This shit never gets said on reddit, and if it did, it gets ignored or downvoted.
As a gay man, I could not have put it better myself. They’re literally saying “Lol isn’t JD’s music super gay? Haha must mean he is too…. HAHAHAHA I’m not homophobic but it’s giving limp wrist…lol”
They’re trying to make being gay or gay ‘things’ into the butt of the joke. This is homophobia, people. It’s not that deep. Do better.
I see the counterargument that “I only use gay as an insult because that’s what would offend them. I’m not homophobic, I just say homophobic things to offend homophobes.”
Nevermind the young men and women out there who are being told that their identity is just ammunition to bully people, we got to be mean to someone on the internet!
Hes only catholic for the aesthetic, he only moved back to the rust belt for as shortly as he could to get elected on a national stage, he’s clearly not happy. Though credit where it’s due, his eyeliner did kinda slap in a way that dripped with irony, given his whole “traditional masculinity” platform. Shame he’s him.
idk, what i’m getting from the article is “yo, this dude likes more queer-coded music, yet he hates all queer people” and not “yo this dude likes queer- coded music, lmao gay”
