The DeArrow extension removes those awful thumbnails and replaces them with a random screenshot from the video. I no longer have to look at some guy’s ugly grinning/shocked mug when selecting the next video to watch.

If I see a face like this I know I don’t want to watch the video. Problem is there are almost no videos left that are not some kind of engagement bait with cranked up emotions and very little substance. I remember when I used YT for learning about stuff. Now I just scroll through idiotic thumbnails and sigh.

It’s kind of a shame for me. I’m like, “I think that sounds like an interesting topic! but I hate your stupid mouth and I don’t want to reward this.”

We’re in the minority it seems though :/

Like another person here explained, many of them hate using these thumbnails and titles. Unfortunately, they have to play these stupid games, if they want the dumb algorithm to advertise their content. YouTube all-around has become pretty awful for finding new stuff. Even the search is utter garbage. It’s all about the shitty algorithm.

Ugh I am trying to find a steam deck focused channel and everyone has done this. Deck Ready, Fan the Deck and now recently Steam Flow is putting in vague titles in their videos.

I hate it … But I can see why they are doing it

I lament at this because I will eventually have to do something like this (not to this extreme) on my own channel since that is what’s getting promoted

This mindset is how we arrived at the shit show we are currently living in. “Everybody is using the Torment Nexus these days, guess I’ll have to use it as well”. Guys when are we going to resist the slop and enshittification taking over? Whatever happened to small scale DIY culture resisting the big buyout?

Unfortunately the genuinely work for increasing engagement. A lot of YouTubers don’t like using thumbnails like this, but they’re passing up on viewers if they don’t.

Yeah, the meta for channels is to make attention-grabbing thumbnails, and the meta for viewers is to use an extension that removes those. Peak innovation! /s

I was just discussing this with my wife. Click bait is effective and is not going anywhere… In fact it’s going to get worse. If that is what people are looking for than people aren’t going to stop unfortunately.

Really goes to show you the state of our Internet as a whole
