I feel so mixed when I hear about her getting better. I’m glad she is, but I also think about all the people who aren’t fairly famous who don’t have support networks that will handle everything for them who also had the same problems. I’m assuming most of them just died, and we don’t hear about it. Also, sure, the government has programs to take care of people with disabilities like this, but from what I’ve heard of her symptoms, she wouldn’t even have had the energy to fill out the paperwork to get on disability probably.

It sucks that I can’t just be happy about this news and my mind wanders to these other people, but I can’t help it. Anyway, I’m happy for her.

      I agree with you.

but on the flip side, her publicly documenting how utterly fucking ruined she was by the covid after effects did probably help people who were suffering from the same feel less alone and may have even increased understanding for them, even if in some marginal degree.

and iirc , she didnt even have the energy to listen to anything.much less fill out paperwork, at her worse… i think for a long stretch of this she basically laid in a dark, silent room cause any stimulation at all was exhausting in the extreme.

Yeah there are a lot of fucking Covid deniers shouting out that long Covid wasn’t a thing. Some degenerate was trying to tell me about 3 months in that she was just faking it for the disability checks.

Her openness, and the other YouTubers that have posted on her behalf are making sure this stays based in reality. I’m sure there will still be people that say she has something not related to COVID but she is actually getting the word out there.

And honestly, perhaps because of her visibility some people have a little bit of hope for recovery. The treatment she’s using does not work for everyone but for everyone that it works for that finds it because she’s talking about it, she is making life worth living for a lot of people.

I’ve been following this so closely for so damn long. When they started her on the new medical regiment and she turned the corner and came back so far it was f****** amazing. I’d love if she got back to regular video making but I’d be perfectly happy if she just gets to live her best life again.

Unfortunately, just referring to Covid still acts like an activation phrase for some people, sending them into a locust frenzy and shutting off their critical thinking or empathy.

You can’t get a word in edgewise that one of the reasons Covid is so bad for you is that it fucks with your immune system in a way that wasn’t expected of similar diseases and can have horrible combined effects with other pre-existing diseases. No, you must be insisting that someone got a coma from what basically felt like the common cold to them, and you must be a gullible moron.

Lemmy is growing, and like any large enough user base, you will get these people.

Also, good on you for posting this, I didn’t know there were any updates over the past year.

Oooooh! That hadn’t even occurred to me. I thought it was just garden variety shitty behavior. I think you’re right, though.

I also see the appearance of thelemmy.club (which as far as I can tell is now, whatever it started out as, a full-time conservative troll instance at this point) as interesting there.

I know I can’t feel what she’s feeling, but I have this intuition that she’s played it up because she didn’t want to go back to the grind of YouTube and had a dedicated partner willing to care for her for 2 years.

Note I could be completely wrong and an asshole, but there’s something about it that feels off. I think it’s because I haven’t heard of anyone who isn’t famous suffering from long covid to this extreme. I do know people who died or almost died, but the ones still alive recovered and function normally for the most part now. They weren’t in bed for years.

The length of a chronic illness was my point. Not what specific illness it was.

Guess that would depend on when you were born if we’re just looking at the objective length.

I was just browsing doctors notes from 1995 with me complaining about the same still unresolved issue.

            But yeah, probably?

            Congratulations?

I used a technique from 1998 to save the day last year. I know even telling you this is beyond your abrtrary freshness demands, but I’m still proud I remembered it and saved the day.

1998 is before your parents met.

I mean, you do you, but I kinda assumed that “upliftingnews” is supposed to be objectively new in this case as well. Not that it’s a big deal.

I had no idea she was even bed ridden because I saw her stuff pop up on my feed every now and then.

Who cares if this is two months old? Physicsgirl is awesome and her getting better is awesome.

This actually gives hope for her returning to making videos

Watch her backlog. She has a great way of making science interesting without being overbearing. There are quite a few shorter ones as well.

The only news since this video was in mid-June saying she was going to travel to Alaska.

Given what we know about this disease, it only takes her overdoing it just a little bit to put her back in bed for days to weeks. I would be surprised if every day she’s had since then has been good, she’s likely had a whole bunch of rough days in addition to the better ones.

I really hope she gets better. I was very sick for about two weeks last year and it was rough to the point where I called my mother to take me to get medical care. I couldn’t take being sick anymore, it was torture to the point of me not wanting to be awake at all.

So I can’t imagine being sick for years. I can’t imagine how it must be to just keep going.
