“(The deal) will lock the European Union into buying vast amounts of oil and fracked gas from the United States. This is bad news for the planet and may derail the EU’s climate targets in the coming years”.

Poor leadership at the EU level. I had defended them, they handled brexit well but now they capitulated to pressure - if there isn’t some part that strengthens Ukraine then this was a shocking bad deal.

We need to put up a digital services tax and increase it every quarter.

I’m not sure what to think. We often underestimate the degree to which previous governments have shaped our country to be dependent on the US and by extension Israel and UK. But the more I read about it (especially the Temperature Check newsletter by The Journal, 29th July 2025 by Laura Boland) the more I feel the EPP have again taken us in the a murkier direction.

Edit: An interesting analysis from an energy advisor Tara Connolly of Beyond Fossil Fuels. She basically debunks any energy advantages, even from the point of view of switching from Russian oil and gas. There is also some indication that the deal is unworkable as we don’t have the infrastructure to even use the vastly higher amount of fossil fuels Von Der Leyen seems to be agreeing to : https://www.rte.ie/radio/radio1/clips/22534029/
