About halfway through the interviewer asks
You write that “different currents within critical ecology and ecosocialism give very different answers to what should be the central coordinates guiding the organisation of post-capitalist societies.” What are these main currents?
I thought the whole interview, and particularly the response to this question, might be interesting to some folks here.
This was great, although I definitely already agreed with much of what was said!
My main takeaway is that neither ‘degrowth’ nor ‘communism’ are sufficient on their own to address planetary crisis in a just way.
A large obstacle to change is described quite well, I think, by Quinn Slobodian in various recent podcast interviews (This Machine Kills, The Dig, and others) where he talks about how workers in different sectors are pitted against each other in order to maintain the capitalist/growth status quo.
So, personally I feel like the only viable route to a degrowth communist or ‘ecommunist’ society is a concerted effort among union leaders and membership to take a vigorously internationalist approach.
Yeah I almost wanted to put a disclaimer about the title seeming misleadingly combative vs the content but couldn’t think of the right wording.
From my perspective, the interview isn’t really comparing and contrasting distinct movements, just interfacing with some of the problems and perspectives that often dominate discussions that use this or that framework and considering what might be overlooked by taking one perspective or the other. You can see from this <s>extremely clear comment </s> why I waffled on including a disclaimer!
I thought the author did a good job coalescing together important aspects that are often treated individually.
Thank you for the article, I’m curious if anyone has come across something that can begin to democratize the needs of people. Like wouldn’t a simple website be able to compile a list with priorities. If this needs to be an international semi organized thing we gotta start somewhere
That would be neat even just as an exercise for encouraging people to think about priorities with such wide lens. Not sure I’ve seen something like that before.
Yeah me neither. There must be someone trying to put together something like a new charter of rights or constitution.
