I am no fan of the police, but in this case they likely have no choice but to zip tie. What you see here are regulations and standards being applied, regardless of how nonsensical they are. My guess is that the standard rules and procedures for detaining and transporting someone in custody require the police officers to restrain the individual using zip ties. I am willing to bet that even if the person was paralyzed from the neck down, and their arms were completely useless, the police officer would have still been required to zip tie their wrists together. Its all stupid. This entire country is stupid.

Have no choice sounds very similar to “just following orders”. They all have free will, they all have a choice.

American cops can shoot people in cold blood and get away with it, do you honestly believe they wouldn’t get away with choosing not to zip tie disabled people?

It is 100% fucked up. I am just saying that it isn’t a one off because the cops felt threatened. This is institutional practice and standards without exceptions, even when it is cruel and makes no sense.

Word. Systemic poverty, systemic racism, systemic police brutality are just that, systemic. Actions perpetuated by norms within a society or group reinforced by rules and regulations that further normalize the behavioral expectations.

There are playbooks to disarm systemic stuff, and they do take concerted efforts to break that system. The movie Brazil documents all of the horrors and risks.

They’d probably zip-tie them to the mobility scooter or some other asinine shit.

They have no excuse to be able to claim danger or threat or violence. This shouldn’t be acceptable way to treat able bodied protesters either but here the cops can’t fall back on their usual excuses
