  • I plan to, actually. I don’t support CCP at all - it’s authoritarian as fuck, with the Great Firewall, the reeducation camps in Xinjiang and the annexation of Tibet - but it’s fascinating to me that the country hasn’t completely collapsed into corruption like so many autocracies, and that they do so much long-term planning.

my impression is that China is a hybrid of state capitalism and central planning, with a lot of poor rural areas and a moderate oligarchy, but that they see billionaires as political rivals (e.g. Jack Ma) and Gilded Age economic inequality as a risk of social unrest and keep it from getting as out of hand as the US.

  • Libertarians in the US want small government on three axes: they want to eliminate programs (e.g. welfare, retirement or universal healthcare), public utilities (e.g. electricity, highways), and regulation (e.g. antitrust, banking laws.) in economic terms, it’s very right-wing, since it’s pure unadulterated capitalism. usually they want government to “stay out of the bedroom and the boardroom” though, so they’re often progressive on civil liberties. unfortunately, many self-styled “libertarians” are socially conservative, or care only about their freedoms.

Left Libertarians see both the State and Corporations as oppressive power structures, and want to reign both in. think Anarchists, but not as radical. most favor decentralized, collective government with lots of direct democracy. New Hampshire is the most right-libertarian state, while Vermont is the most left-libertarian.

the Libertarian Party in the US is ridiculously disorganized because organizing Libertarians is like herding cats. afaik there aren’t really unified Libertarian parties anywhere in the world, though maybe e.g. the Pirate Party would be close?

  • No boot sequences

(being annoyingly pedantic) technically there is a boot sequence: the Gameboy logo. on the DMG there’s a little blob of code from 0x0000 to 0x00ff that clears some memory, sets up the screen, reads the logo from cartridge memory and scrolls it. the loader only jumps to the game if the logo is byte-identical (the idea being that unlicensed games could be sued for trademark infringement.)

on the GBC the loader is a little beefier but mostly the same.

    t. made a horribly broken FPGA core for the DMG that got just far enough to load the Tetris intro

  • I’ll admit to it.

I used to think Tesla was based, since it paved the way for mass-market EVs to happen. I still think SpaceX is based because of the booster reuse and droneship recovery of Falcon 9, and the massive potential for Starship to make space massively cheaper, and Starlink for bringing Internet to rural areas/war zones like Ukraine (despite clouding the skies.)

On a personal level I found him disgusting, and as a billionaire I think he’s the sickness at the core of our economy and society. The projects of his companies were genuinely useful, though.

So yeah, in 2015 he would have been closer to the bottom of my list of most evil billionaires, whereas now he’s way at the top.

  • it’s not 2014 anymore. we aren’t canceling anyone. we’re getting canceled. JKR is doing victory laps. NHS has banned HRT for minors, as have 27 states. we’re kicked out of the military, and forbidden from security clearances. teachers in Florida can’t even use their own pronouns. Medicaid/Medicare/ACA funding for HRT for adults is stripped now. we can’t get passports with the correct gender marker. Sarah McBride has to use the men’s bathroom in Congress. Newsom calls us freaks. conservative media is calling us groomers and every time there’s a mass shooter they spread the rumor the shooter was trans. “gender ideology” is the new Satanic Panic. NYT keeps running op-eds on why Dems should throw us under the bus. Nancy Mace shouted “tr*nny” three times on the House floor and wasn’t censured for it.

you really think we’re the ones holding the cards?
