  • Not a fan of UBI here as a practical solution, but it’s nice as a heuristic vision in discussions. It wouldn’t solve any problems on its own, prices would just adapt and you’re back at 0. That is, unless you put in the effort to fight the political fights for regulation of rent and food prices, working conditions etc. And if you do that well, you don’t need UBI. Anyway, UBI as a concept helps “summarize” where such fights would be needed IMHO, I just don’t believe it would magically make exploitative businesses not exploit everything they can.

Thanks for the long list! I’m not “opposed” to typst, whatever that would mean, just a bit cautious picking up new workflows/investing into skills that may become irrelevant 2 years later. But it seems that for my use case the main advantage are more useful error messages (which does suck sometimes using latex). I also see a potential new use case, if I need to use/create a new template, which can take some time with latex. The other points are not really bothering me. I write my texts in vim and build the pdf later, once the text is finished. Latex is fast enough for that.

I’ve seen this floating around a few times but am too tired to invest energy into this specific hype train. What exactly makes it stand apart from latex or markdown (then pandoced into latex)? Genuine question. I think once you’ve found your way around Latex, the major pain IMHO is whenever you apply it for a new use case and need to find out which packages to load that are not outdated. Ah, and alt text for images. But AFAIR this is already mostly solved, just not shipped widely yet.

Pros of Latex I think are important to keep in mind:

    • it works since ever and for probably the rest of all our careers
    • there is an established community
    • the codebase doesn’t change on a whim

  • Yes, that is a debate. AFAIK (from Japan), the vending machine providers give home owners a monthly rent for putting the machine on their property, but the home owners pay for the electricity costs. There was an article 1-2 years ago about how that model became basically a zero sum game for the home owners, because of rising electricity costs but I don’t remember the details

Agree with the ragebait, but (theoretically) they might interview more than one person at a time. He talks about 50-60 interviews a day, so with that seat layout, we have a max of 8*60=480 interviewees (assuming the interviewer is also sitting). That would be 240 drinks per day.

But it’s going to be quite busy. Let’s say he works 12 hours = 5 interviews/hour = 12 minutes per interview = 1.5 minutes per interviewee. That is not accounting for the time everyone needs to settle in and sit down/get up and out again; the time for him to casually get people to use their very limited time to buy a drink instead of being interviewed somehow (?) Also not accounting for the work involved in inviting and scheduling people, refilling the machine, costs of drinks, office space etc. And the soul draining work of funneling 480 people per day through a stupid fake interview, repeat the same thing every 12 minutes, just to get them to buy a drink instead of doing something useful.

What a nightmare. In this scenario, he is really the person to feel bad for. Imagine a life like that 😅

And apart from that: The more logical setup would be to turn off the air condition in the waiting area and put the vending machine there.

  • Been there, didn’t work out for me. I get the ownership argument and all, long-term perspective etc., but just going non-monogamous doesn’t solve anything.

Current hot take: it’s more important that you really invest all the time, attention, effort, love they deserve into every person you want to have in your life. Personally, I can’t do that for more than one other human. I even struggle with one.
