In my view, placing a leg or half my body from under the blanket regulates my temperature, with warmth under the blanket moving to my uncovered body to dissipate, allowing me to achieve warmth without getting too warm and getting to the nasty, sweaty stage.
I’m sure this occurs to some degree, though I’m not sure how much.

The message is right and true, but it’s being conveyed by parody, not historical record. Presenting it as something that literally happened will undermine its effectiveness. In the right context, it makes the point very well, just like most memes.
