Thats precisely the distinction the wapo reporter makes
I believe those were from the fighting happening elsewhere since there was an active rebellion going on with soldiers being lynched etc. What the wapo reporter is speaking against is this idea in the western mind of peaceful protesters on tiananmen square being mowed down by gunfire.
There were no deaths recorded there though. Here is what a reporter of the washington post who was in Beijing at the time says about that.

If you are talking about tank man i can just show you you can clearly see tiananmen square in the background and the direction the tanks are going and where the guy is pointing.
not to mention the amount of people who dont know its a still of a video with tiananmen square in the background.

I can personally recommend “Trans liberation: beyond pink and blue”, which is a series of talks by leslie feinberg on trans issues and intersectionality. Its not written with cis men in mind but might be a closer match? At any rate a really great read.
