I enjoyed using a MBP for a few years, mostly for the trackpad. I eventually grew too annoyed with the desktop crashes and iCloud bloat though. I built a new Linux workstation last year, and it just feels like home 🐧.

banshee@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is anyone else not feeling that patriotic for July 4?3·1 month agoI find the bit about believing the lies we’re fed as somewhat naive. We’re all on a journey, and everyone starts in a different place, with unique foundations.
My current opinions vary wildly from those held 20 years ago. Change is a good thing, and I think it should be expected as the norm.

They might want to try giving him large sums of money as well.
banshee@lemmy.worldto Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Old man believes whatever he sees on cable TV2·2 months agoThanks for the discussion. Just to restate - I absolutely believe everyone that the protests in which Bernie participated were described as violent. I was not disagreeing with this whatsoever.
You mention having “familiarity with all of this,” and I do not. This is the only comment I read from Bernie about the protests.
banshee@lemmy.worldto Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Old man believes whatever he sees on cable TV62·2 months agoI understand they were accused of being violent. The descriptions I read didn’t seem violent though, although they might be inaccurately biased.
I think protesters will always be accused of violence whenever possible. I just don’t understand how this makes Bernie’s statement inconsistent.

I researched his arrest to learn what wasn’t said in the images. Are you suggesting that resisting arrest is equivalent to violent rioting?
banshee@lemmy.worldto Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Old man believes whatever he sees on cable TV93·2 months agoAlright this got me curious, so I researched the matter further. I do believe you are wrong here.
From what I can gather, Bernie was arrested for being chained together with others to protest the installation of Willis Wagons. This was nonviolent. When the police arrested him, he kicked, screamed, and resisted the entire way.

banshee@lemmy.worldto Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Old man believes whatever he sees on cable TV181·2 months agoI won’t pretend to know much about Bernie’s history, but I do have a couple of thoughts with which you may or may not agree.
- We should never blindly follow any politician.
- Politicians should be expected to change/evolve. It’s probably a good idea to consider the delta to understand each politician’s trajectory.
Out of curiosity, do you prefer past or present Bernie?

I know it wasn’t the point of this post, but thanks for teaching me about this bit of history! This helped me understand why he emphasized discipline.

Advertising itself is Still Allowed, but not in a Way That Secretly Tracks Everyone’s Behavior.English33·2 months agoI disagree. The online advertising industry needs to shrink, and we should probably break up the monopolies.
Look at this chart:
Growth of advertising correlates with enshittification.
I believe we do not truly have agency but have evolved to think and act as though we do. Since inputs to each choice are likely infinite (probably uncountable as opposed to countable), the lack of agency is difficult to observe.
banshee@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those of you that have negative sentiments towards AI: What would you want to happen right now?14·3 months agoI am largely concerned that the development and evolution of generative AI is driven by hype/consumer interests instead of academia. Companies will prioritize opportunities to profit from consumers enjoying the novelty and use the tech to increase vendor lock-in.
I would much rather see the field advanced by scientific and academic interests. Let’s focus on solving problems that help everyone instead of temporarily boosting profit margins.
I believe this is similar to how CPU R&D changed course dramatically in the 90s due to the sudden popularity in PCs. We could have enjoyed 64 bit processors and SMT a decade earlier.
banshee@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Driving a manual: is it difficult?8·3 months agoDriving a manual is pretty easy, but it depends on how you handle failure. The learning process requires making a few mistakes while you become familiar with a clutch and shifting gears.
Also, I think it’s much easier to learn if you know what the parts are doing. Watch some videos on how it all works and what different RPMs sound like.
Yep - I don’t really know who these evangelists are either. I have read about “fearless concurrency,” which seems pretty spot-on.
