  • In the U.S. with insurance you would have easily hit the deductible and out-of-pocket costs though that does mean you would have been billed a few thousand dollars easily (on top of the regular monthly insurance costs). Everyone has slightly different health insurance plans so the actual amount would be hard to predict for a hypothetical question.

One thing you got me thinking, I’m not too sure how often U.S. insurers would actually cover someone to literally stay 4 months in a hospital, maybe in rare extreme cases? Insurance companies typically only approve x amount of days/weeks in hospitals or rehabilitation facilities so once you use up those approved days the hospital has to figure out how to get you out or start billing you directly at a few thousand per day.

  • On a weekday would take 24-48 hours, work would probably start making calls if I just randomly stopped showing up. It would be odd enough if I didn’t show up for one day without calling/emailing anyone, 2 days would become concerning.

Might take longer over a weekend, depends whether I have any family trying to text or call me.

  • The sole does end up slightly more worn than the right.

You should check this out with a doctor, you could be developing leg length discrepancy. It might be very slight right now if you haven’t already noticed any obvious limp but if it’s developing you may be able to catch the source of the issue early on. Could be a hip issue, scoliosis, something else. I don’t want to make you worry about stuff, just something to check out.

I’m going through something similar right now, sort of started years ago with one of my shoes always wearing out before the other. And I always wore a backpack that would rub against the back of my shirts/jackets walking around. Never put two and two together, figured I just had a crappy backpack and crappy shoes but over time this morphed into a slight barely noticeable limp that turned into a more noticeable limp. Eventually that turned into a little bit of hip pain that kept getting worse. When I finally did see a doctor it turned out I developed leg length discrepancy due to osteoarthritis in my hip, apparently this hit me early on in life most people get something like that in their 60s-70s so I’m 20 years early. Going to get hip replacement surgery soon and get it fixed.

Hopefully you’ve got nothing like that but it’s good to check.

  • Years back when I checked it out it was full of people into conspiracy theories and general bigotry. Interestingly they weren’t specifically right-wing at the time and in fact when the site was originally started it was named something like antiextremes as a reference to not wanting to be left or right leaning.

But you know, over time it just kind of filled up with the types of people that typically got banned on mainstream sites like Reddit. You’ll get an idea of how people in general are there by reading through the posts and comments there.

  • World/Inferno Friendship Society by far, must have seen them 10-15 times in the NYC/NJ area. Averaged 1-2 times a year up until the lead singer passed away 4 years ago (RIP CLOTH). Their live show was kind of a intense mix of dancing, moshing, singing along and just kind of letting loose. The fans sort of created an entire community around the band and we’d recognize each other from all the other shows we’ve been to together. Their annual halloween show (Hallowmas) was always the highlight, the band would go all out with live show spectacles both on and off the stage.

I still go to plenty of other live shows, at the moment have leaned into folk punk bands. Apes Of State and Escape From the Zoo are some of my current favorites maybe seen them 4-5 times now.

  • That’s a good tip, it’s a good idea to subscribe to a Lemmy instance that participates in Fediseer (IMO). It helps to keep spammy instances off your own instance hence lower spam posts overall.

A lot of spammers tend to spin up their own Lemmy instances just to spam the rest of the Fediverse, or they’ll create a ton of new accounts on an instance with lax admin/moderation to use for spam later.

You don’t even need to browse the Fediseer website directly, pretty much all Lemmy instances participating in Fediseer will have the “Guarantor” and “Endorsements” links in the sidebar of their homepage.

  • Kind of like that it’s a bit slippery, makes it easy to slide into my pocket. A case would just feel too bulky and and would need more force to get in/out of my jean pockets (IMO).

Regrettably, despite having a case, I managed to crack the screen anyway. It fell face down onto a pointy rock. My first broken screen, ever.

Oof yeah I sympathize :) My previous Pixel had a screen protector on it and I still managed to crack the screen by dropping the phone on a corner and getting a nice little corner crack. After that I figured why keep bothering with these protectors haha.

  • May be overthinking it a bit, the typical opportunistic thief that would try to snatch a phone and run is just looking to see what bank apps you have installed. Usually they are looking to see if you have something like Venmo installed so they can go into your app and send themselves your money. Venmo of course will say that money was transferred from your phone so it was clearly you and there’s nothing to dispute, hence you’re fucked.

These type of thieves already know to try to keep the screen unlocked long enough to do that, afterwards they usually just toss the phone somewhere. The phone hardware itself isn’t that useful while it’s still locked down and tied to someone’s Google/Apple account, most phones are firmware locked in that fashion. Sure they could wait it out until you finally remove the phone from your Google/Apple account but every time they check it’ll keep giving out their location, not really worth it.

Nowadays current Android phones do have theft protection to prevent loss in a snatch attempt e.g. my Android has settings to auto lock it if it detects fast movement while unlocked, and it also auto locks if the entire phone itself has been set offline/airplane mode for a while.
