And for the majority of Americans cults just get laughed at as well. At least until it started leaking into politics, but that is being seen in many other countries now, too.

A lot of Americans are doing horrible things, and there definitely is something about the culture here that affects that, as you don’t see the mass shooting and school shooting issues in other parts of the world as strongly. But coming at this saying that it doesn’t really happen outside of the USA and that it doesn’t happen in the UK is just ridiculous. If you make a statement that infers you don’t understand per capital, then you’ll get a reply making that rebuttal.

  • Just today I had to explain to a coworker how I grew to love Linux because I was hating Windows, I don’t hate Windows because I love Linux. And I don’t want to hate Windows, I wish they were slowly becoming anti-user, but they keep adding (forcing) features that are so unfriendly to the user.

I had to help someone figure out why their new storage drive wasn’t showing up, and it was because Windows has something called “Storage Spaces”, turning “unused” storage drives into a sort of virtual raid local One Drive. It’s a neat idea, but it hides the physical drive from File Explorer and Disk Management. That should be a feature you have to intentionally configure and enable, not something that can just happen automatically.

  • This isn’t about body positivity. They can still be obese and need to lose weight. They can have other health conditions directly and immediately caused by being overweight. But there is an all too real and all too common experience of doctors refusing to even consider other ailments simply because the patient is obese.

That is not okay. Even if they see a hundred patients a day where their issues are only caused by being obese, they cannot be allowed to fall into the mindset where that is what they immediately assume.

  • Yes, if obesity is impacting their health. Obesity may be putting them at higher risk for certain conditions and diseases, and is putting extra strain on their bodies, but that should not impact a medical professional’s complete diagnosis. This is how people suffer and/or die from otherwise treatable conditions.

Sure, but sometimes (a lot of the time, from the experiences of multiple women in my life) doctors use “you’re overweight” as a thought terminating phrase and won’t even begin to look at other possible illnesses or treatments other than “you’re overweight, you need diet and exercise”.

By all means, if obesity is impacting their health it is something that needs to be addressed as well. That doesn’t negate other health issues that happen to be comorbid with obesity, though.

Nah, some people might get offended right from the get go if you start talking about the basics with them, but it’s only a problem if you continue to insist that you know better than them once it becomes clear they have an understanding of the topic. Like, if you’re excited to talk about dinosaurs and the person you’re talking to is a paleontologist, but you pivot to talking about deeper aspects of the topic once you realize, you’re all good! Even better if you start asking them questions to learn from their expertise.

On the other hand, if you realize that they are a paleontologist and completely disregard that, insisting to them that you actually know more than them, or continue trying to explain base concepts, then yeah, you’re a jerk.

  • I can certainly see situations to face the other way, and wouldn’t think twice if I got in an elevator and someone was facing away from the door. It just seems less of a social construct and more of just practicality.

Now, who gets to press the buttons in the elevator, and whether you should ask for someone to press it for you or ask them to move aside so you can press it, are definitely things I struggle with if there is a group of people getting on an elevator at the same time. (I usually just let that one go without me and wait for another one)

  • What constitutes as “fun” for you? How did alcohol play into it before?

If your idea of fun was going out to a club or bar with friends, was it the alcohol that you had fun with, or was it the social engagement? You can still have social nights out, you just need to try to change to venues (and/or friend groups) that don’t expect alcohol to be a part of the activities. If you enjoy board games, maybe find a board game group. If you enjoy dancing, see if there are dance classes or studios nearby that are alcohol free.

If you usually stay at home and drink to alter your senses while watching TV/movies/videos, or play video games, or such, try doing the same things but without the drinks. Maybe change it up a little bit, to make it more novel and less likely to feel like you’re missing something from your usual routine, but see how you enjoy the same hobbies sober.

If you would just sit around drinking, either at home or at a bar, was that actually fun, or was it just something you did to occupy the time? It might have just been a convenient escape. There are other escapes you can find, whether a new hobby, or exercise and fitness, or meditation.

Just be mindful to try to find something sustainable and healthy. Right now, drinking is a habit, and you don’t really get rid of habits, you replace them with different ones. There are a good handful of people suggesting weed, and there is nothing wrong with that, but you’ll have the same habits of “needing” something to enjoy the activities you do now, just it’s weed instead of alcohol.

Not saying there is a wrong direction to face while riding an elevator (without further context), but it always just made sense to me to face the door you expect to open when the elevator gets to the floor you’re traveling to. Like, nothing stops you from facing sideways on a moving sidewalk, but facing the direction you intend to go when the ride is over is more convenient.
