was it ever truly open? everything is a google service
like witty username pointed out, aosp is open, so other OS’s like GrapheneOS are based on android but without any google services. the stock android you get though is not
unfortunately graphene only works on select devices though
With higher demand comes higher supply.
E.g. my next phone will MUST to support free OS.

Yes, but we need budget (read: under 200) Linux phones first.
I’d go one step further: the work phones first. Something like a new kind of BlackBerry (cheaper screen) that can be folded.
