You can see how silly this is when you replace dd with the functionally equivalent cat: cat /dev/sda | pv | cat > /dev/sdb 😂
If you pipe, dd is the wrong tool anyway. Replace with cp or cat. dd is a fine scalpel but a bad shovel.
