When you wrote or typed on the top sheet, the substance on the carbon paper would imprint on the second sheet, making a more-or-less exact copy of whatever you wrote or typed on that second sheet, hence a “carbon copy”
The term “carbon copy” is the origin of the “cc” field when copying others on an email.
