This is not an inadvertent side effect, and the sudden recent push for identity verification in Western countries is not about “protecting children,” it’s about re-consolidating control of what people see & hear, to finally close the decentralized flow of information which really burst into awareness for rich elites during Arab Spring.
I wouldn’t call being a slave to algorithmic manipulation “decentralized”.

It’s not as decentralized as it should be, but let’s not underestimate the effect social media has had on activism and political organizing in the 21st century. It is decentralized compared to everything that came before it.
