I’ve pretty much dodged everything about the game - story, gameplay, art direction, trailers - so I know barely anything about the game. Some people seem to be praising it quite a bit for its more “classic” soulslike approach and have been comparing it to DS1 even.
How do you like it so far? Is the comparison to DS1 sound?
A gamer on Twitch gave it a 3 or 4 out of ten. The level design is poor - lots of backtracking for no reason, and too many empty, pointless rooms. Weapon combos can be broken if the enemy simply breathes on you, meaning combos are useless and frustrating to try and actually use. The only weapon worth your time is the axe.
The comparison to DS1 is extremely generous. That’s clearly what the devs were going for, but the execution is lacking. Wait for it to go on sale.
That sounds quite disappointing. Not that I had high hopes to begin with, but I’m wondering where the praise is coming from then. Sure, IGN isn’t the best metric, but an 8/10 doesn’t sound as bad as you’re making it out to be.
Have you played the game yet?
Not personally. I’m just relaying his complaints. I watched his stream for over an hour, and saw examples of everything he talked about.
He plays a lot of soulslike games, like Lies of P, so I thought his evaluation would be useful.
Yea yea, for sure
Ign has been paid to give good reviews for a long time now. Means you have to subtract at least 2 from most of their scores to set appropriate expectations.
I’ve played up to the first boss so far and I think it’s pretty fun. The attacks feel really flashy and combat is punishing if you try to combo something to seat because they don’t really flinch from your hits.
That said, I think it’s not too bad so far. It’s very pretty visually, which is nice.
