Onion stories used to be slightly believable, able to trick the casual reader.
Police officers handling a situation without violence? Easily spotted as pure fiction.
I think the satire is in the fact that the headline wouldn’t make headlines anywhere else.
I have loved The Onion recently. I could be mistaken, but I seem to remember there was a fairly obvious drop off in writing quality for a number of years so I didn’t pay much attention to it for a long time. Now it seems that they got new talent or the writers just got better with time.
