Donald Trump has called for an end to the Senate filibuster, effectively ordering Republicans to not only defy the will of their base but also backtrack on longstanding party policy to end the Congressional stalemate.
“It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option—Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post Thursday night.
The directive will add monumental pressure on the Senate to find a resolution to the funding blockade, but it’s not clear whether Republicans will bend.
"Now WE are in power, and if we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying ‘SHUT DOWN,’” he continued on Truth Social. “If the Republicans are not using the Great Strength and Policies made available to us by ending the Filibuster, the Democrats will exercise their rights, and it will be done in the first day they take office, regardless of whether or not we do it.”
“BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE GONE STONE COLD ‘CRAZY,’ THE CHOICE IS CLEAR—INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION,’ GET RID OF THE FILIBUSTER AND, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump added in a separate post.
I’ve read elsewhere that the Senate Leadership really, really doesn’t want to do this. Their logic is that if the Filibuster goes away, and Democrats ever achieve full control of the Presidency and Congress again, they will immediately move to:
- add justices to the supreme court
- ratify DC and PR as states, adding 4 reliable Democratic Senators and 4 or 5 Representatives
- pass anti-gerrymandering legislation
All of which couldn’t be blocked if the legislative filibuster dies.
And basically undo all the ratfucking of our system that Mitch McConnell and his friends have so painstakingly set up.
I say this all the time but it bears repeating- the GOP knows the filibuster is good for them or they would have removed it long ago. The Dems get plausible deniability for never doing anything so they will never remove it.
That makes sense except when you consider the way Trump is governing they are not expecting another election ever.
Right. Trump is governing like there will not be another election, but the Senate is. There are a lot of ways to read that.
Well for Trump, either way there will not be another election. Either the system stays intact and he is disqualified or he says screw the system and stays in office. Our he dies first.
I wouldn’t put it past the GOP to kill the filibuster now, but put it back in place right before losing power to the Dems. It’s a pretty frequent playbook where GOP loses elections, and then passes laws to strip power from the incoming party on the way out the doorl
The Senate filibuster is something that the majority party sets as the rules when the new Senate is seated following elections. It’s a procedural rule. The only reason one side has not removed the rule, is because they know there is no going back. If the Republicans remove the filibuster, and even if they put it back on place right after, then the Democrats should have no qualms removing the filibuster once they are in the majority on the Senate again.
It’s kinda like a prisoner’s dilemma.
This doesn’t sound so bad, except that it will continue the prospect of 1 party rule, which will lead to further corruption and destruction of the U.S… I think the key factor though is “if” Democrats achieve full control, which seems unlikely at this point, all things considered, as the far right already has full control and is already ratfucking the entire system, including working to end free and fair elections.

Orange man learns new word this week, uses it everywhere.
When my grandpa became ill with dementia, it would be one theme (a word, topic, anything) that caught his attention. It would be that, nonstop, until something else caught his attention.
How would this not hurt republicans in the long run…?
It will which is why this probably won’t pan out.
Trump has a history of saying idiotic things without following through on them this is almost certainly one of those things he says to stir the pot.
Be on the lookout for him doing some other shit and using this filibuster bluster as cover for infinitely more shady shit.
They don’t care. They already prepare to rig future elections.
Democrats kept voting for cloture to prevent their own from filibustering Trumps nominations. It’s not as if the filibuster has been a problem for Republicans, there’s almost always enough dems crossing over for them to get their way.
Because there are no longer going to be free and fair elections.
Says the wannabe dictator with a net -9.2 approval rating.
How dare someone exercise their rights.
Sadly that isn’t what he’s saying. What he’s saying is worse. He’s claiming that the GOP is justified in ending the filibuster because when Democrats retake congress in the future “the Democrats will exercise their rights, and it will be done in the first day they take office”.
He’s accusing future Democrats of the crime he wants to commit as a justification for him committing the crime today.
Conservatism believes the minorities (of any demographic) want to take revenge on them and punish them. It’s so fucking telling that they KNOW they are intentionally hurting minority groups for the own [perceived] benefit. They believe minority groups want to enact their own anti-majority laws because… The majority wants to enact their anti-minority laws on minorities. Let me be clear, the majority is the largest demographic, not a 2/3 majority, not even a 51% majority. Just the largest group. 33% wants to hurt 6 other 17% groups. That’s any demographic you want to measure. “Christians” vs ag/aeth/mus/jew/hindu/bud. White euro vs african/latin/asian/indian/mid east/slavic.
None of these groups want revenge. They want equality.
Every fear of minorities is a projection of their own tactics, a justification for their own acts. The party of “tough guys” lives in fear. Fear of cities, fear of skin color, fear of immigrants, fear of not having an emotional support gun, fear of other religions, fear of measured facts hurting their feelings, fear of poverty, fear of invasion, fear of other languages. So they enstill that fear into every other group they can. We have insane abilities to communicate globally, insane amounts of corporate wealth hoarding, insane greed over resources, and yet they’re still playing the dark forest trope, telling you every noise in the night is out to kill you. .
Conservatism believes the minorities (of any demographic) want to take revenge on them and punish them.
With that kind of behavior it’s a self fulfilling prophecy that the victims will eventually stop seeking justice and start seeking revenge.
Precrime?
Nuke the hurricane and nuke the shut down. Don’t like that television commercial? Nuke it
Trump attempting nuke a hurricane always makes me think of this situation:
Haha, love it. Except… radiation. 😭
Trump is worried about the November EBT Riots
November is really the perfect month for a king to remind American families he will deny food on their tables to prove a point, while he simultaneously uses tax dollars to build a gold plated ballroom for his palace.

Who needs to eat when you can watch me dance?

Also, banally, Democrats picked Obamacare subsidies as their red line, and open enrollment for Obamacare plans – sans subsidies – opens tomorrow. How big the outcry over increased premiums is will be politically telling. Whether it works or not, it’s absolutely the card Senate democrats have been waiting to play.
Umm, do it? This is the reason blamed for not passing a progressive reforms by Democrats, or getting them nerfed by compromising with Republicans.
DNC dems would love to finally be offiicially powerless.
Hey senators I think he means this:

Updated that for ya
Funny how I’ve never seen a front on pic of the wh without the east wing. Anyone got one?
Both parties has revoked filibuster rules in the past. This “nuclear option” is not made up by Trump.
No one made the claim that he did
Just providing context. Shouldn’t be concerned with more information.
