“I feel trapped working, but I can’t stop working,” Lydia says, sitting up to cuddle her basset hound, Brigette. Her husband, Bill, gives her a kiss but lets her be. The 90-year-old would like to get a job to help Lydia pay the bills, but because of health problems, there’s little he can do.

“I feel so guilty that I can’t work,” Bill says.

“You can’t work because of your age and your health issues,” Lydia snaps back. “There’s no sense feeling guilty about it.”

By 2022, the cumulative effects of overpopulation, global warming, and pollution have caused ecocide, leading to severe worldwide shortages of food, water, and housing, bringing human civilization to the brink of collapse. New York City has a population of 40 million, and only the elite can afford spacious apartments, clean water, and natural food in walled-off communities patrolled by armed guards. Their homes are fortified, with moats, security systems, and bodyguards for their tenants. Usually, they include concubines (who are referred to as “furniture” and have no human rights and are passed from one apartment owner to the next). Meanwhile, the majority live in squalor, haul water from communal spigots, and eat highly processed food wafers made by the Soylent Corporation.

I mean bad with money is bad with money. Without reading the article, I assume the story is about someone 81 y/o. She had decades on top of decades of favorable economies, strong US dollar, great interest rates, affordable housing on unskilled labor wages, every opportunity to take advantage of tax free retirement plans for the past 50+ years, plus being old enough to actually get back everything she put into social security. I have 0 sympathies for old timers who cant retire and will work till death do you part.

Without reading the article let me use the headline to reinforce my own prejudices and alleviate any concerns I have about the collapse of the middle class.
